Benguet: Mt Pulag experience with side trip to Baguio City

Mt. Pulag - is the third highest mountain in the philippines and the Highest point in Luzon with a 2,922 MASL and it is located in the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao and Nueva Viscaya.

I wasn't blogging that much about my mountain experiences back then so I decided to back track and blog about my Mt. Pulag experience. It is one of the most exhiliriating hikes and the mountain that I really wanted to conquer because of the sea of clouds. Thank God I keep diaries so I'd be able to have a detailed write up about my experiences here.

So this happened in December 27-30 2015. Almost 1 year before I could actually write about it. I feel so guilty being so lazy sometimes. Anyway, I was supposed to be in this hike with my fellow TMK hiker friends, but due to the typhoon we weren't able to pushed through. But since George and I were already in our excited moods to hike we decided to book from another agency and so off we go to Baguio on the 27th of December. We arrived in Baguio on the 28th of Dec at around 4 am and then we are loaded in a jeep going straight to Benguet. I was really sleepy at this point but the road was zigzag so you have to adjust your sitting every now and then and the ride was so long. It must be a 50km ++ away from Baguio proper.

At Ranger Station

The tour consist of free food for the whole Pulag Adventure as well so we didn't have any problem with that. We stopped over for a buffet breakfast near the DENR station. Then we had the registration and then another 1 hour of travel from the DENR to the mt. Pulag ranger station. We had our lunch before setting camp and we are allowed to do whatever we want after. It was really chilly since we had our camp on one of the hills in the renager station. (Sobrang lakas ng hangin). By afternoon we were trying to rest but a lot of the campers were busy talking so we just tried to sleep. Before the sun settled we got lucky to have seen a few sea of clouds near our camp. By 7pm we had our dinner and at 8pm we settled into our tents and its lights off already cause by 12:30 am its the start of our assent to the summit.

At the campsite

The clouds we saw that afternoon at the campsite.

Sunset and clouds, a premonition of a successful hike tomorrow.

It was really a struggle when we were on the assault. Maybe because the winds not helping out either, the place we're going is slowly elevating and the air is getting thinner. But mind you it's still one of the most unforgettable hikes for me, we arrived at Camp 2 by 4:30 am and we still had just an hour to summit and the sun's about to rise. They say that sometimes people are not that lucky to witness this sea of clouds, but thank God we did! It was so mesmerizing seeing the sun rise and you're above the clouds and I'm with him and God's just so amazing.  At that time my camera were freezing and could not open because of the negative 2 degrees we are having at the summit. Good thing my iphones still working so we had a few good shots.

At sunrise with the sea of clouds.

Mt. Ugo in the background. (We'll conquer you soon!)

Nung mga panahong hinde pa siya marunong mag rule of thirds. Lol

After summit we descended to camp 2 and had our breakfast waiting for us. We both decided to descent afterwards to reach the campsite before noon and be able to use the restroom before the rest of the other tourist would crowd the bathroom! We decided to clean ourselves after, nakakamatay po sa lamig yung mala-yelong tubig, (the water feels like ice that's burning my skin as well). But I really wanted to clean myself. Haha!

Descent. :)

After the Mt. Pulag experience we had sidetrip at the sulfur spring and the hanging bridge before going back to Baguio Proper. Our friends, jian and kim, texted us then if we wanted to stay in Baguio before going home because they are there as well. Because of exhaustion and we wanted to stay a little longer together we said yes. We stayed at Blue Mountain Hotel at 900/night rate and we just had dinner with them by 8pm at Hillside Station.

The next day we had a tour at Camp john hay, ate lunch at Kung Jeon where we had an experience wearing hanbok, and then chilled at Chocolate de batirol before going home.

Till next travels,

Lucille.
